Before you set off

  • Confirm paperwork: microchip number, rescue contact, and destination details.
  • Plan breaks: every 60–90 minutes for short leads toilet stops in safe areas.
  • Pack essentials: slip lead, harness, spare lead, towels, water, bowls, poo bags, wipes, blankets.

Car setup and safety

  • Secure the dog using a properly fitted crate, a crash‑tested car harness, or a secured partitioned boot.
  • Use a slip lead at handovers; double‑lead nervous dogs. Doors/windows closed when clipping in.
  • Temperature control: shade, ventilation, and never leave dogs unattended in cars.

On the road

  • Drive smoothly, avoid loud music; speak calmly.
  • Offer small amounts of water at breaks; avoid feeding during short transports.
  • If travel sickness occurs, pull over safely, clean up, and continue when settled.

Handover best practices

  • Swap the receiving lead while maintaining control of the original lead.
  • Confirm identity, destination, and any meds/notes before leaving.
  • Send a quick update to the coordinator when complete.
