Dog Transport Tips (UK): Safe, Low‑Stress Journeys
Guides • Oct 2025
Before you set off
- Confirm paperwork: microchip number, rescue contact, and destination details.
- Plan breaks: every 60–90 minutes for short leads toilet stops in safe areas.
- Pack essentials: slip lead, harness, spare lead, towels, water, bowls, poo bags, wipes, blankets.
Car setup and safety
- Secure the dog using a properly fitted crate, a crash‑tested car harness, or a secured partitioned boot.
- Use a slip lead at handovers; double‑lead nervous dogs. Doors/windows closed when clipping in.
- Temperature control: shade, ventilation, and never leave dogs unattended in cars.
On the road
- Drive smoothly, avoid loud music; speak calmly.
- Offer small amounts of water at breaks; avoid feeding during short transports.
- If travel sickness occurs, pull over safely, clean up, and continue when settled.
Handover best practices
- Swap the receiving lead while maintaining control of the original lead.
- Confirm identity, destination, and any meds/notes before leaving.
- Send a quick update to the coordinator when complete.
